(N.Morgan) The beginning of the 2017 hurricane season has already wreaked  2 catastrophic storms that have left a trail of destruction and devastation in their wake.
The current hurricane, dubbed Irma, is continuing to tear up the west coast of Florida – with roof-ripping winds and gushing floodwaters leaving millions without power – after bearing down on the city of Tampa early today.
This “monster” storm measuring more than 400 miles wide was downgraded from category three to one on Monday morning, but still has maximum sustained winds of 85mph.
Warnings of hazardous storm surges remain in effect through vast swaths of the state from which six million people fled in one of the biggest evacuations in US history.

LakelandPD added 3 new photos: This is Why We Become Police Officers
Tonight a team of Lakeland Officers received a call in reference to a family stranded in the car that was submerged in about 4 feet of water in a ditch. Even though it was 12:30AM and the full strength of Hurricane Irma was about to hit Lakeland; our guys didn’t hesitate. They responded to Swindell Road in the MRAP vehicle which was able to travel in high water and withstand the intense winds.
In the car they found two adults and two small children, ages six months and ten months old. The water had reached the kids car seats. Thankfully… all were not injured and officers were able to safely get them out of the car for transport. With no injuries, they were taken to their house.
When you become a police officer you hope you make a difference in the lives of others. Tonight, there is no doubt these officers made a difference!
