Staff say likelihood of a positive result is 'unlikely'

An e-mail sent to staff at the University Health Network confirms that a patient is being tested for the Ebola virus.

The letter says a person who had been in west Africa entered the hospital, presenting with a fever. It goes on to say they think the chances of a positive test coming back is unlikely, but they are taking precautions just in case.

Dr. Michael Gardam from the University Health Network told our media partner CP24 that the patient visited Nigeria recently, and is being treated at Toronto General.

He says that country hasn't presented a case of Ebola in more than 21 days, and expects it will be taken off the WHO outbreak list shortly.

The patient has been moved into isolation until the test results come back and hospital staff working in the unit are wearing protective gear.

The e-mail goes on to say Ebola is just one of several diagnoses they are working on and expect to have initial test results back within 24 hours.
